Now there’s a portion of food on your plate. Rice, fish, maybe an egg, and veggies. You also happened to have side dishes; rice cracker and chili sauce. Let’s take a look. Where does the rice come from? The local farmer or imported from Thailand/Vietnam? How about the fish? Is it from a nearby river, or it’s a sea fish far from where you live? The egg? The veggies? Are they locally grown or you buy it from the supermarket?
In times of pandemic, people are getting more conscious about their surroundings including their food. This is the right time for us to promote sustainable consumption in a larger society, once they know the cost of living a healthy life, people will start to pursue it daily.
Sustainable consumption means to ensure all products that we ate come from responsible sources, grown sustainably, and locally. It is the awareness of the environment that meet economic needs when people are starting to be more mindful about their ingredients. To ensure that they buy from the local farmers to support local economies, buy organic material to encourage farmers to do more sustainable farming, and to minimize carbon footprints.
In this talk, Ana Prada as the founder of the 3Colibris organization in Latin America shared her experience in encouraging sustainable consumption. They start to befriend the locals, exchanging experience, before they begin to start the campaign on sustainable consumption.
The participants came from various backgrounds. Among them are plantation companies, staff, and managers from Sumatera to Papua. There are university students from Sumatera and Kalimantan, also lectures from Kalimantan. Some other participants were also joined from Mexico, Japan, and Nigeria. The talk was conducted for almost two hours, due to the time difference between Indonesia and Colombia it must end before mid-day in Indonesia or mid-night in Colombia.
We would like to thank everyone who has joined, hopefully, they took something from the session no matter how small, to be practiced in their community around. People should watch their plates. Because we are what we eat, right? So make sure it’s not fake and grown wisely in the best possible way. [HSL]
